Flax top is a combed fiber preparation made from flax tow — the short fibers (2-4") that remain in the hackles after preparing the line. Flax top is easy to spin and does not require a distaff. Linen yarn spun from flax top is great to use as a weft in weaving or for knitting. The inherent luster of the linen yarn is due to the wax Content of the flax fibers. Euroflax flax top is available in natural and bleached white, 3.5 ounce hanks.

Naturally colored rusty-brown upland cotton. Fiber length is approximately 3/4 inch carded sliver. Will darken when washed in hot soapy water. Boiling speeds darkening, but as the first washing is pretty dramatic, boiling is not necessary. Sensitive to pH; alkalinity will darken, acidity will lighten the color. This will always be true. There is no final color, as a dip in vinegar or soda ash will change the tone slightly.

This vegetable fiber comes from the plant known as “china grass” or Rhea, technically Boehmeria nivea. The plant grows in China and the Far East. Ramie fibers come from the inner portions of the plants bark. In processing, the fibers are degummed, bleached and combed. Ramie fibers are the strongest of all vegetable fibers. They are typically spun for weaving table linens because they lack elasticity.
