Weaving and Spinning Week at Halcyon Yarn will be a celebration of weaving and spinning times three:

First  the “Twisted Spinsters” of Halcyon Yarn  will do a “Show and Spin” from 10am- 3pm, October 6th.  They will gather to share their spun yarns, rovings they’ve dyed, projects they’ve created,  and to share just being together to celebrate the day.  Drop in, bring your wheel or spindle, and any items you’ve finished throughout the year.

Second, enjoy an evening with our master weaver and friend Michael Patterson, as we get together with weavers in our classroom. Join the gathering from 5pm- 8pm whether you are a novice or expert weaver and submerge yourself in conversation and craft.  Bring any “show and tell” you would like to share along with your creative ideas.

**For both of these events we’ll be hosting the fun with decadent fall cookies from Marnees, and hot and cold apple cider as we honor the weaving and spinning crafts and the people who do them.

Lastly, but truly not least, we’ll be joyously celebrating fiber with our Annual Open House, October 10th, 2009 from 9am-4pm. During this once-a-year special event we open our doors to share  demonstrations in all the fiber arts, delicious seasonal goodies, and a fun filled day of fiber extravaganza… plus generous discounts.

Mark your calendars and plan to stop in for a visit or come for the day, it’s always a treat to gather here at Halcyon Yarn!

“Crackle Weave” with Michael Patterson on August 14 & 15. Call immediately to sign up for this weekend’s class!

There is a whole week of “kid classes” scheduled for the week of August 17 thru August 21. Check our class listings to see what’s available and don’t miss out.  The classes are gauged mainly to teach children ages 6 and up, but the kids at heart are always welcome as well.

“Have a Ball Blending” with Susan Douglas on August 22. Susan will show you her techniques in blending wool for color combinations and texture that will give you amazing variations in your spinning fibers.  Susan’s classes are always full, so call and register soon.

“Beyond The Basics Spinning” with Rudy Amann  August 28 & 29. Stretch your spinning knowledge with this advanced beginner class that will range from spinning worsted and woolen yarns, dyed roving and different plying techniques as well.

Lastly, but not least of course is..

“Going To The Dogs” with Marianne Dubois on  September 4. Marianne teaches needle felting that is so adorable you can hardly stand it.  Bring your favorite pooch to life with a pile of natural colored wools and a needle… A fun medium and a great craft to take on the go.

Sign up for the Sunday workshop with “2-at-a Time Socks” with Melissa Morgan-Oakes, May 17th from 9:00am- 3:30pm. Call and reserve your spot! There will be a book signing Friday May 15th from 4:00pm-6:00pm at the shop, come join us.

If you have any mittens in the works still, please send them along to us at any time.  I’ve got a special box to store them over the summer months and we’ll be more then ready for the fall.

One final thing… Halcyon and the “Soldier’s Knit-a-Long” were featured in a public television series called “Knitting Daily.com”.  They’ll be featuring the glomitts and the gauntlets that all of you have knit and the devotion behind charity knitting sometime in late July.  Check your channel listings for times or check online, at www.knittingdaily.com

February is almost upon us and in the fiber circles people are buzzing about the upcoming 2009 Spa Weekend at the Hilton Garden Hotel in Freeport, Maine, February 27-March 1!   Everyone here at Halcyon Yarn thought it would be fun to kick off the festivities with a wine, cheese and shopping event that would add a nice little side trip to the fiber filled weekend.  We’ll be hosting the evening at the shop from 5pm – 7pm on Friday, February 27th and will be offering a “Spa attendees” discount as well as some specially home baked appetizers from Halcyon herself.  Come join in the fun!   If by chance you can’t make it to the reception we’ll also be open Saturday, February 28th from 9-4 pm.  Hope to see you there!

February 14th, Marianne Dubois will once again be teaching, “Going To The Dogs” needle felting.  Come join her and learn how to make these sweet little guys for yourself or for fun gifts to give the ones you love…

Winter Break spans over February 16th – February 20th and we’ll be having a couple different kinds of fun classes for the kids.  ”Two Sticks and a String: Beginning Knitting for Kids and Teens“, will be February 18th, as well as, “Rock & Roll Felting” and “Felted Treasure Bags” on February 19th.  There will be two different sessions on each of those days featuring each class, so call and schedule soon before all the spaces are filled!

Spinning Fever has hit the scene with our “Intensive Beginning Spinning” class instructed by Rudy Amann.  The man, the myth, the spinning guru… well, his class in February filled up so fast we asked if he’d be available for another before his next scheduled class in May and he has agreed!  So, mark your calendars or call soon and book your space for another offering on April 20th & April 21st; a Monday/Tuesday class for all you newby spinners.  Don’t let “Intensive” scare you off… it should read, “complete”, “overall”, “absolute”… Sign up soon… you won’t be disappointed!

Join Melissa to learn the secret of knitting 2 socks at once on one circular needle.  Just imagine, two socks started and finished at the same time.  They’re still portable, still fun, but no “second sock syndrome”.  With Melissa’s guidance, students will create their own miniature sample socks using the technique outlined in her book. It’s a revolution in sock making!
