It’s Weaving Time – Scrumptious Scarves on Tap

If you are still stumped for holiday weaving ideas, I have three for you to ponder this newsletter.

2. The book Weaving Made Easy by Liz Gipson is a good Project Idea Book to keep on your shelf. It has 17 projects for the rigid heddle loom ranging from scarves and slippers to bags, mats and pillows. You will find plenty to do with great instructions and technique. In the back there is a glossary, a warping checklist and a project planning sheet to help you with the math!

3. The book Time to Weave by Jane Patrick is not your ordinary weaving book. Jane focuses on the use of natural, vintage and recycled materials using innovative weaving techniques that you may not even need a loom for! There are 16 projects to get your creative juices flowing including rugs, lamps, cards and baskets. Looking for a unique gift idea to weave? Or a great book to give a weaver? This is the one!

Our book selection has grown over the years and we occasionally need to cull the ones that have either collected a bit of dust or were purchased a bit too heavily in a surge of popularity in certain knitting rages that came and went leaving us with a little extra stock.

“Summer Sundays”

Keeping up with the busy days of summer, Halcyon thought it would be a great idea to be open for a partial day on Sunday throughout the summer months. The shop will be open from 12:00 noon until 3:30 pm on Sundays for all your fiber needs, from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Hope you can make time to come see us! 40 years… Not many companies are saying that today. We’re working on ours here at Halcyon Yarn, but until we get to that level we’d like to wish Schacht a well deserved congratulations and job well done after all these years. We polled these folks on what they’d like (that was affordable) – so if you or someone you know gets excited about fibers, it’s a good bet that these items will be a hit AND a great value.

Shotzee Medium Weight Drop Spindle $38.95 Made in Maine. Beautifully made cherry drop spindle weighs 1.0-1.75 ounces. The two pieces are roughed out and joined, then turned on the lathe as a unit to preserve balance for the longest spin. The stick is worked to have stops which prevent that annoying creep of the yarn cone down into the spinner’s fingers.

You’ll wonder how you got along without this indispensable tool for dealing with unidentified, mystery yarn. To find the yards per pound loop a strand of yarn over the balancing arm. Trim the yarn until the arm balances. Remove the yarn, measure it in inches and multiple the length by 100. That number will be an estimate of the number of yards per pound. If you know how many yards are in a pound, and the weight of your leftovers, simple math will tell you how many yards of yarn you have. The balance stands 6.25″ tall, and works with any yarn. Metric requires a bit of math.
