With its unique fiber combination of 35% Hemp/Flax, 35% Cotton and 30% Rayon, Block Island Blend Yarn is a stand out among Halcyon’s Signature Yarns. We’ve been excited about this yarn all along – even more so as we’ve brought production closer to home. If you’re not familiar with this yarn you’re missing out. This stylish 3-ply yarn has one ply of a gentle slub cotton for textural interest, one ply of rayon for subtle sheen and one ply of a hemp/linen blend for added body and strength. You’ll love the wonderful textural dimension it adds to both woven and knitted pieces. Each fiber takes the dye slightly differently creating rich tonal colors and with 29 colors there’s lots to love. Make sure you check out Halcyon’s video highlighting Block Island Blend to see this distinct yarn.

We love it that customers are looking for more locally produced yarns. We’re fortunate that producing yarn to our stringent standards has become possible in Maine.  Block Island Blend is spun by our good friends at JaggerBrothers, just up the road in Springvale. The spun yarn heads back down to the coast to new and wonderful Saco River Dyehouse to be dyed. Finished yarns are stocked in our one-and-only retail location in Bath, waiting for your visit or order!

Long known for its elegance and sophistication in woven wraps and table linens such as the Woven Cowl Wrap - Block Island Blend and the Seguin Sunset Table Set weaving pattern, Block Island is now being discovered and loved by knitters. The new [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] features [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] in Therese Chynoweth’s Mint Cascade, a gorgeous cardigan with set in sleeves with each side framed by lacey cascading leaves. Of course we’ve always known it’s a fantastic yarn for knitting. We’ve experimented knitting it at multiple gauges with both a single strand as well as doubled. There’s something to love about each swatch. One of our all time favorite sweater patterns is the Very Versatile Neck Down Hoodie / hooded pullover by Knitting Pure and Simple in which we used 2 stands of Block Island knit at 4 stitches per inch. How about lace? Just 3 mini cones is all it takes for the Heirloom Lace Scarf in Signature Block Island Blend. Give Block Island Blend a try and let us know what you think.

We convinced Susan and Kate to jump in front of the camera and share their favorite gifts for the season. Check out the videos, and their recommended gifts below.

In her video, Susan shares her love of the Alpine Topper, either to make for a gift, or to give as a “kit” (pick some pretty colors, and the pattern, an organza bag, and give to your favorite knitter)! Susan has some suggestions for yarn pairings, or give us a call.

Kate describes why she picked with the Nova Interchangeable Deluxe Needle Set. In the store, we’ve also seen evidence in the finished works flying off her set :-)

We’ve started uploading a series of short videos, giving staff a chance to share their favorite gift item. We’ll start off with a gift idea for weavers, from Halcyon. Find it on youtube:

And here is Ginny, who provides a peek into some inspiring Felting how-to books in this youtube video:

Join Beth and Kate in this how-to video  to see just how easy and fun it is to make rope! We love the Incredible Rope Machine. You can make all kinds of ropes – ropes for ties, ropes for bag handles, ropes for pretend play. It’s total fun for kids and adults.

My o my have we been having fun showing off the new [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] Yarn… And the soft, elegant, quick and fun to make scarf that folks are making with this yarn. The pattern for the yarn is included, and, in fact is inside the label.

But, because it is an unusual technique, and because you probably wouldn’t believe how easy it is unless you see it yourself (we wouldn’t!), we’ve made a video to share. Take a look – and let us know what else you’re making with Park Avenue!

Here it is on Vimeo, for those who prefer:

We’ve had such great response to Susie Stephenson’s book Designing and Hooking Primitive Rugs, and so much fun in her classes, we wanted to share some of her energy and knowledge with you all. Here, a two part video we put together last time she stopped by Halcyon Yarn: Part 1, rug hooking with yarn, examples and inspirations, and Part 2, rug hooking with yarn, a hands-on how-to. As Susie says (and shows), you can learn to hook rugs in 15 minutes, but spend a life time developing designs. These videos start with examples of some of Susie’s wonderful rugs, and give us glimpses into what inspired them. She then gives a great intro to rug hooking with yarn (hint: it came out beautifully!) that makes it look easy and fun. She also talks about the uses of yarn and roving in rug hooking, inspirations that are certainly near and dear to our heart. We had a great time making these videos, and on a personal note I’m planning out my first rug hooking project… So watch at your own risk! If you feel the need to get geared up, try our Halcyon Yarn Rug Wool,Halcyon Deco Rug Wool Yarn, or Halcyon Geo Rug Wool Yarn, and our rug hooking pages for supplies.
