Before there were plastic bobbins there were quills. Quills are too narrow to fit on most single-ended bobbin winders, so you'll have to wind them by hand, or use a double ended bobbin winder or a special quill winder (see below). Available in 3.5", 4", 5" and 6" lengths. Sold in packages of 10.
Single ended bobbin winders have tapered shafts for standard size bobbins and pirns. Quills, however, are too thin and require special quill winders fitted with narrow shafts. Double ended winders, especially electric ones, can be real time savers, if you weave with exceptionally fine yarns, or if you warp sectionally. Only double ended winders can accomodate cardboard spools.
