Seguin Cottage Hearthside Rug Kit
Inspired by the lighthouse keeper's cottage on Seguin Island our easy-to-weave area rugs bring the warmth and charm of the Maine coast to your home. Woven to last in Halcyon's Signature Rug Wool. The Seguin Cottage Hearthside Rugs are a fun way to learn several basic rug weaving techniques: plain weave, boundweave twill and soumak. Each finished rug measures approximately 23" x 48" including the braided fringe.
The "Signal Rug" is woven on a cream white base. The symmetrical ray design reflects the extraordinary First Order Fresnel lens that has served as a beacon to sailors at the mouth of the Kennebec River since 1857. This irreplaceable lens is the only one in Maine and and its light can be seen over 20 nautical miles away.
The "Coastline Rug" is woven on a natural heather grey base. Its gradations of blue and green, climbing steps of soumak and dotted color bars evoke the climb from sea to sky as visitors traverse the lush green hiking trails that navigate the 64 acres of Seguin Island.
You will need a four shaft loom with a minimum weaving width of 24", a reed that allows for four doubled ends per inch (4 or 8 dent is best) and four ski shuttles.

Deco Rug Wool is a favorite wool for rug weavers. Halcyon Yarn's Signature Deco Rug Wool is a sleek and sturdy 3-ply rug wool. Deco is a lighter weight but still rugged version of our 3-ply Classic Rug Wool (item #001). Deco rug yarn is 100% wool dyed on white for crisp, clear color. The classic beauty and durability of Halcyon's Rug Wool in smaller sizes make both Deco and Geo (item #003) rug wools extremely versatile yarns for everything from woven rugs and tapestries to knitted bags, outerwear and punched or hooked pieces. Geo is dyed in the same colors as Deco but on a natural heathered single ply grey for softer, muted colors. The Deco/Geo color range is ideal for mixing and matching, blending and shading. Try double stranding two similar colors to create distinctive tonal effects and custom colors. Deco and Geo are essentially the same size yarn so you can play with both color and surface appearance by using both in the same project.

Casco Bay Cottons care:
Machine washability and subtle Colors that fade softly and gradually make these ideal yarns for easy care children's sweaters and baby blankets. As with any cotton some shrinkage may occur after washing. To accurately determine sizing and sett or gauge be sure to wash and finish your swatch as you will your completed piece. Due to its soft construction, items made with these yarns fill out nicely after gentle machine washing and drying. When working with bold or highly contrasting colors we suggest testing for color fastness. It is not uncommon for excess dye to be present in strong colors. If bleeding occurs, skein and wash until the water runs clear and let hang dry.

Halcyon Yarn's Signature Botanica wool yarn is a unique 100% wool yarn for knitters and weavers. Botanica’s lush and vibrant color palette is a favorite for knitting, felting and weaving. The hard to find colors make it especially interesting for knitting intarsia and fair isle designs. The unique spiraled 2-ply twist creates a distinctive yarn with a shadowed or corded appearance that looks fantastic in every stitch and lends great texture and definition to any piece. Worsted spun from a special quality wool for exceptional shine, luster and durability with a soft and springy hand, Botanica worsted wool is far less likely to pill than other Comparable yarns. Botanica is a little more dense, with fewer yards per pound than a standard worsted weight yarn so you will need to add an extra 25-30% yarn by weight or purchase comparable yardages. Felted knitting made with Botanica has a wonderfully pebbled texture and an elegant “finished” look that does not "pill" easily, making it outstanding for outerwear.
Halcyon's Botanica yarn is durable, holds its shape well and is mothproofed for added longevity making it a great yarn for classic pieces you'll hand down for generations!
Weavers: Botanica is stretchy so when winding your warp, add at least 10-20% extra to the length because the warp will shorten considerably when tension is released. When weaving, always release the warp tension before measuring the picks of your weft, otherwise it will be inaccurate. The smoothness of Botanica makes densely warped double weave a snap. Botanica's smooth texture combines beautifully with mohair or bouclé making those yarns easier to use in weaving.
Care: Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry.

About: JaggerSpun Maine Line 2/20's Yarn
These versatile, high quality worsted spun yarns have become staples of commercial and recreational knitters, weavers, and others. Made in Maine of soft, medium grade wool, these yarns will easily make a way into clothing and other products. As a worsted spun yarn, it is smoother and shinier than woolen spun yarns, such as Harrisville. They also won't full as much when washed/finished, so plan on a closer sett or tighter gauge (finish your swatch to determine if you like the finished piece). JaggerSpun is dyed with the finest dyes possible. Excess dyes may be present in some colors so sample first. If excess dye is present, skein the yarn and rinse until the water runs clear. Deep purples may not be colorfast when exposed to sun, so avoid prolonged exposure to bright light.
Care: Hand wash in cool water or dry clean. Lay flat to dry.
