Einband Lopi
Lopi's Einband, a beautiful singles spun from 100% new Icelandic Wool, is a good choice for lighter weight yet warm sweaters, lace shawls or accessories, or as an interesting add-along to lend body and strength to Plötulopi (unspun roving).
Description
Description
Available in a broad color range with all the strength, durability, warmth, and breathability you expect from the long-staple fiber of Icelandic wool in a gauge fine enough for lace knitting. Einband relaxes and fulls nicely after finishing, however it will retain some bounce and body rather than developing the more slouchy-soft drape of some finer fibers like merino.
The softly heathered natural shades and richly dyed colors, all in a smaller put-up make this a lovely yarn for stranded colorwork or experimenting with playful combinations in accessories. For wonderful color effects and a heavier gauge Einband can also be knitted using multiple strands together. Try using two strands together and alternating in a new color with each color change to achieve a beautiful color block “fade” or marled look!
(Halcyon Yarn stocks all available colors of Einband and other Lopi yarns.)
As with many fine-gauge yarns the needle size and gauge (or weaving sett) will vary by project. Einband can be knit on a range from US size #1 to #7 needles to achieve a stitch gauge from 7.5 stitches/inch to 3.75 stitches per inch. Einband will soften and full after wet finishing and we strongly recommend a gauge swatch prior to planning pieces that require a specific fit or sizing. Items made in Einband can be quite stretchy in progress and the single-ply construction will cause the in-process (or fresh off the loom) pieces to pull in or “slant” on the bias of the twist a bit, wet-finishing and blocking will resolve this beautifully, but it is why we recommend swatching!
Weavers:
If you are not an experienced weaver we recommend using Einband only in your weft rather than warp as it has a slightly slubbed single-ply spin which can be tricky in a warp. Einband works very well for finer tapestry wefts with a slightly more rustic hand than plied yarns of comparable weight. If you do choose to warp with it please use a reed that gives it space not to rub in the dents and be gentle as it may have a tendency to break or “worm” so tensioning can be a challenge. It can be beautiful, but we recommend a practice sample first!
Einband yarn, like all of the Lopi collections, is minimally processed to retain the natural look and amazing qualities of the wool itself. It is not superwash and will felt if desired. Lopi yarns are entirely produced in Iceland and are among the most sustainable in the world. From employee-ownership of the company, to the high-efficiency mill, to the extremely high standards of animal care, Lopi yarns live up to all of the best values we believe a yarn should have. Plus items made in Lopi yarns will “last forever” with proper care and are beautiful for generations to come!
Care: Handwash gently in cool water with a delicate laundry soap. Do not wring or agitate as this yarn will felt. Block and lay flat to dry.
