Silk caps are the degummed cocoons of Bombyx mori. Each cap has several fine layers of continuous fibers which make the strongest, shiniest silk possible. To spin a cap, separate the layers, extend each layer into a large "smoke ring" and then open the ring and wind the strand of fibers onto a paper towel tube. One cap weighs between three-quarters of an ounce to one ounce. Hankies are square as compared to the caps that are bell shaped. Approximately 3 hankies weigh one ounce.
