Felted Easter Eggs and More

Easter will soon be upon us. It’s the perfect holiday for some felting fun. I thought I’d share what my felting needle has been up to in preparation and give you some other great ideas.

Felted Easter Eggs

First, I’ve never been a big fan of fake synthetic Easter grass. Oh yes, it looks great in those baskets but little strands of it seem to make there way into all parts of my house. Well, while at work one day standing in front of the beautiful colors of Harrisville Dyed and Carded Wool Fiber it dawned on me. Why not fill my kids’ Easter baskets with fleece! The difficult part was choosing a green, but I finally decided upon  Harrisville Kiwi, color 487. I LOVE the results. Take a look for yourself. Amos’ daughter Frida seems to approve. Or perhaps she’s more intrigued with the felted Easter eggs, my next project. What do you think?

Those of you who might want to follow my lead, plan on one half pound bag filling approximately 3-4 average size Easter baskets, as pictured. To use, unwrap the batts, pull apart and fluff pieces of the batt until the basket is filled with colorful fleece. After the holiday, store in the bag and next year fluff all over again.

My next project was needle felted Easter eggs. Although we don’t have a specific kit, they’re super easy. And I’ve got a tip to make it a little more cost effective. Start with some inexpensive undyed wool to make your basic egg shape and use colored fleece only for the outer layer. For the eggs pictured above I used  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] for the core and  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] for the final outer color. With 6 oz of 21 colors, the Rainbow batting pack gives you lots of color possibilities for your eggs. As for the natural wool used for the core, plan on 3 oz to make approximately one dozen eggs. I used a Felting Needles, 38 gauge, 3-barb, Triangular (4-pack) for needling. Decorating/needling is great fun -solid, marbled, adding a motif or a child’s initial, oh the possibilities.

My third project is a work in progress, an Easter garland. I made an Easter rope with the Schacht Incredible Rope Machine and Yarn Twister and plan on needling more eggs. The picture below shows the rope and some of the eggs. You’ll just have to envision the eggs hanging.

I’m also planning on needle felting a few cute animals that will make there way into the Easter baskets. We have some great kits –   [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] ,  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] ,  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] ,  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] ,  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock]   [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] . For those of you looking for more inspiration, I have two books to recommend,  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] and  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] .

  1. I love the idea of using wool instead of plastic grass. I have an image of a young child becoming enthralled with the wool as a precursor to becoming a knitter or spinner! Beautiful pictures full of vibrant color.
