Latvian Mitten Exhibit

We’re delighted to share very special display of antique Latvian mittens. Forty-five pairs of hand knitted mittens featuring traditional Latvian designs, with samples representing all five historical regions are here at Halcyon Yarn for a limited time this winter.

Many of these intricate pieces are over fifty years old and each tells its own story. Latvian mittens are beautiful examples of colorwork and distinctive knitting and finishing techniques. Latvian mittens are a living example of craft as narrative. The beautiful designs are symbolic of mythological and cultural themes and no two pairs, or stories, are alike. Large collections of mittens were traditionally knitted and given to mark life’s milestones, especially as part of marriage rituals. Enjoy an up-close look at these rare examples of incredible folk art.

This exhibit is currently traveling the country and we’re very pleased to share it with you. These wonderful works of knitted art will be on display through the end of the year. We’ll be holding a mitten workshop soon too – stay tuned…

Don’t miss this unique exhibit!
