Quick Knits: There IS still time before the holidays!

Wanting to do something creative, but feeling like you might not get it done in time? Well it’s Quick Knits to the rescue! Here are 5 simple and quick gifts to give:

1. Amanda Hat

The Amanda Hat is soft and fast! It’s a free downloadable pattern (thanks and nice work Gina!) that is yummy with our Malabrigo in any color. If you’re careful and knit to gauge, you can even whip up a pair of fingerless mitts to match!

2. Maine Morning Mitts by Clara Parks

These fingerless mitts are a staple in northeastern outerwear. With the daily changes in temperature these mitts are just enough to ward off the chill while not being too bulky. Find the pattern in “The Book of Yarn” by Clara Parks or it’s a free download from knittersreview.com. Try it in Noro Kureyon!

3. Victorian Stole (Halcyon Exclusive)

The Victorian Stole is a perfect quick knit for a luxurious holiday event or a light layer of warmth on a cool evening by the fire. We suggest Victorian Boucle, of course!

4. Snow Angels

Add a festive touch to gift wrapping, hang on a tree or in a window – These snow angels are quick, easy and sweet! Five angels fly out of each skein of the wondrously soft Angora Fashion.

5 Multidirectional Scarf

This is such a fun and fast knit! The multidirectional knitting adds a little design while the yarn does the rest. A great quick gift, and another great excuse to pick up some Noro Kureyon. You can download a version of the pattern here, or look at the comments for this post for the modified version pictured (modifications by Beth Hood).

    Hi Gail,

Thanks for pointing out that I overlooked the pattern! I updated the post to include a link to the original pattern. Here is the modified pattern used to make the scarf pictured:

    MULTIDIRECTIONAL DIAGONAL SCARF

Materials: Approximately 200 yards worsted weight yarn for a 4 foot scarf 300 yards worsted weight yarn for a 6 foot scarf

Exact size will depend on yarn and needle size. For a solid-looking scarf, use the needle size recommended for the yarn, a larger needle will result in a lacier look.

Terms: Inc = knit into front and back of stitch
SSK=slip next two stitches individually as if to knit, put tip of left needle into slipped stitches
SKP=slip one as if to knit, K1, pass slipped stitch over

    Instructions:
    Cast on 1 stitch
Row 1: Inc into stitch (2 sts)
Row 2: Inc into first stitch, K to end (3 sts)

Repeat row 2 until one side of your triangle (i.e. not the ‘live’ edge on the needle) is as wide as you want your scarf. (The yardage given above is for 5 inches wide)

    Short Row Section:

Row 1: Inc, SSK (or SKP throughout, your choice), turn.
Row 2 and all even-numbered rows: Knit .
Row 3: Inc, K1, SSK, turn.
Row 5: Inc, K2, SSK, turn
Row 7: Inc, K3, SSK, turn.

Continue in this manner, increasing by one stitch in every odd-numbered row between the inc and the SSK (you won’t need to count because you will always be SSK-ing the two stitches on either side of the gap that forms from your turn on the previous row.)

Work until you have SSK-ed the last two stitches of the row.
Next Row: start over at Row 1 of the Short Row Section.
Continue working Short Row Sections until your scarf is almost as long as you want it.

    For the Last Triangle:

Work as with previous triangles until 1/2 of the stitches are on the right needle and 1/2 of the stitches remain on the left needle. Instead of starting each garter stitch ridge with an increase, start the ridge with a deccrease (i.e. K1, K2tog). Continue to work the decrease in the middle of the row as before, and after making this second decrease, both needles will have the same number of sts. When 6 sts remain, work as follows:
    K1, K3tog, turn, K2
    K3tog, turn, K1
K2tog, cut yarn & pull through last remaining loop. Weave in ends and add fringe if desired.

How do we get the instructions for the multidirectional scarf if we order Noro Kureyon from you? Thanks
