A cool story became an equally cool project when Barbara Kelly-Landry decided to recreate a rare textile artifact; this hat was found during an archaeological dig in Cape Breton, Canada. Having fortuitously fallen into a latrine, the hat was preserved by the muck it landed in. Over 200 years later, you can now knit your own adaptation of this historical accessory thanks to Kelly-Landry, who in my opinion has a very fun job.
The cozy project you see above is Sara Greer’s “Half Hap”, a handspun adaptation of a lighter weight, commercial yarn version designed by Rebecca Blair. Greer used four shades of Shetland fiber to spin a bulky weight 2-ply, which shows off the border detail beautifully.
Meagan Condon took DIY fiber arts to a whole new level in her fascinating article about retting her own bast fiber. Taking photos every step of the way, Condon processed lemongrass harvested at her own home to be used as spinning fiber. The results may have you looking at your own garden a little differently – I know I am!
