Next Step in Weaving
Instructor: Sybil Shiland. Meets on: Friday, Satruday, and Sunday, December 8 - 10, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm / 3 days.
This is a project based class designed to aid students in reviewing and consolidating skills acquired in a beginning weaving class. Students will weave two or more dish towels in a weave structure and color way of your choice (kits with materials will be provided). You will be using Halcyon designed patterns for twill, plain weave, or waffle weave towels.
This class has some homework. Students will choose a kit and the materials will be mailed well ahead of time so that the warp can be made at home. Looms are available in the classroom for students. If you would like to bring your own loom please be sure that it is in working order with a workable reed and adequate number of heddles.
Participants should have some weaving experience and/or have taken a beginning weaving class. Students should be familiar with the warping process as they will be winding the warp for their project at home before the class. Detailed instructions on making the warp will be included. Each student will warp on weave their projects on one of the classroom looms. Students are welcome to bring their own loom if they would prefer. Sybil will be available via e-mail leading up to the class for those who have questions or trouble with the warping at home.
Warp the loom. There will be plenty of time to answer questions about the warping process and review of how to read a threading draft.
Complete warping. Check for and correct (if necessary) threading errors, review keeping warp tension and beat even using PPI as a gauge, hem finishes, reading the treadling section of the draft, checking for and correcting treadling erros, fixing a broken warp, measuring the woven piece, etc.
Complete the weaving and cut from the loom. Discuss finishing and answer any remaining questions. If there is time, the instructor will help students plan their next project (choosing a draft, determining appropriate yarns, and figuring quantities).
