For the guys!
Portuguese Fisherman’s Sweater
Throughout history, the art of knitting has been practiced across all genders and ages. So why is it so hard to find patterns for men? Here’s a list of knitting patterns featuring just that:
First, I just have to mention that we are super excited to be carrying Rib Magazine No. 2 - Navigate. This is a beautiful publication geared towards men who knit and those who knit for them. Learn more about this cool magazine in my recent blog post here.
The Portuguese Fisherman Pullover is a favorite year after year. This stand-by pullover features sizes for the whole family and it looks great in almost any worsted weight wool. Easy enough for a beginner, but with a patterned yoke that makes it interesting for all. Try it in Bartlettyarns Maine Wool - Sport Yarn or Peace Fleece Yarn for a classic New England look, or Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed Yarn for something extra soft and refined in amazing tweed colors.
If you’re looking for smaller projects, the Men's Heavy Weight Boot Sock by Knitting Pure and Simple is an easy choice. These can be rugged and warm knit up in Tuffy Canadian Sock Yarn or Botanica Yarn, or make a pair of soft house socks out of Malabrigo Merino Worsted Wool Yarn.
I really like the Basic Cardigan Vest for Men by Knitting Pure and Simple, especially made out of Lamb's Pride Worsted Yarn – the subtle sheen and fuzz of this yarn makes it one of my favorites to work with.
The Men's Vest by Knitting Pure and Simple is another great classic. Make it out of Cascade 220 Superwash Wool Yarn for an easy to wash piece, or use Harrisville Highland Yarn - Washed Skeins for a wooly, rugged Maine garment.
Sweaters, though! The Men's Neck Down Henley Knitting Pure and Simple is a wonderfully wearable piece. Use your favorite worsted weight yarn for a versatile sweater that suits any style.
Another basic wardrobe staple is the Neck Down Pullover by Knitting Pure and Simple. This can be made out of one of the classic New England woolies (like Peace Fleece Yarn or Bartlettyarns Maine Wool Yarn), or use the softer Malabrigo Merino Worsted Wool Yarn for a more colorful finish.
Looking for a basic V-neck? Check out the Neck Down V Neck Pullover for Men by Knitting Pure and Simple, which uses light worsted or DK weight yarn.
The Neckdown Cardigan for Men by Knitting Pure and Simple is another fun option if you’re tired of pullovers.
Another alternative to your basic pullover is the Neck Down Men's Hooded (Hoodie) Pullover by Knitting Pure and Simple. Knit this cozy sweater out of Cascade Eco and Cascade Eco Plus Wool Yarn for a rugged, heathered finish, or use Heirloom Romney yarn by Fancy Tiger Crafts for a warm, slightly fuzzy, surprisingly soft piece.
Lastly, you can always go traditional with the Fisherlad Guernsey - Yankee Knitter, a tried and true favorite. This deceptively easy to make sweater is great made from your favorite light worsted weight yarn.
Whether you’re knitting for yourself, or your favorite guy, these classic patterns will look great year after year!
