Norumbega Medium Yarn description:
Norumbega is a distinctive Aran weight yarn, spun right here in Maine from 100% U.S. wool. Previously known as Botanica, this sturdy yarn was first created for weavers over 40 years ago - and it is still being spun in the same family-run mill that weve used for decades. Norumbegas smooth, pearly 2-ply twist creates a delightfully squishy yet durable fabric that is very resistant to pilling. Its warmth, softness, and long-lasting wear make it a great choice for sweaters, jackets, and winter accessories that will last season after season.
Norumbega is worsted spun for a more firm yarn, with fewer yards per pound than a standard worsted weight yarn, so you will need to add an extra 20-30% yarn by weight, or purchase based on actual yardages for your pattern. Norumbega offers exceptional shine and luster with a soft and springy hand. Norumbega is very strong and holds its shape well, making it a great yarn for classic pieces youll hand down for generations!
Remember, worsted spun yarn does not full or bloom the same way woolen spun yarn does. Choose an appropriate gauge or sett and beat the weft as you want the finished product to look.
With colors reminiscent of a stroll through lush and vibrant landscapes the exquisite color range is complimented by its high luster and unique twist. Beginning with a special quality wool, Norumbega is worsted spun for a soft, yet strong and durable yarn. The unique spiraled ply creates a shadowed or corded appearance that looks fantastic in every stitch and lends great texture and definition to your finished cloth.
This hearty New England classic can be used for any craft including weaving, crochet, or knitting - and it felts beautifully!
Weavers:
Norumbega is quite stretchy so when winding your warp, add at least 10-20% extra to the length because the warp will shorten considerably when tension is released - or be very careful to wind onto the warping board without adding any tension. Always release the warp tension before measuring the picks of your weft, otherwise, it will be inaccurate. The smoothness of Norumbega makes densely warped double weave a snap. Similarly, use Norumbega to reduce the stickiness of mohair or bouclé by alternating this smooth yarn with the fuzzier yarns. Its even tough enough for upholstery and lends itself to such decorative applications as boundweave wall hangings. All things considered, our favorite use is the very coziest of twill blankets.
Knitters:
The corded appearance of Botanica adds an elegant finish to both stockinette and intricately cabled Aran patterns. Our customers rave about its ability to hold texture. Give it a try and youll see its unlike any yarn with which youve knit. With the color range, fair isles are great fun. Because its worsted spun it is far less likely to pill than other yarns. A definite plus when youve invested much time and care in your knitting. Substitute Norumbega in your favorite patterns calling for worsted weight yarn but be sure to add an extra 25-30% yarn (by weight) because this yarn is a little denser and has fewer yards per pound than a standard worsted.
Care:
Hand wash gently with mild soap in lukewarm water. Lay flat to dry.
To remove excess moisture you can spin in the washer or roll gently in a towel before blocking.
Mothproofed to help ensure the safety of your handmade goods when stored.
