The irresistible ridges of rep weave make a great table setting. The color interactions in the gradient block weave make for an almost iridescent appearance in high sheen Pearl Cotton. Woven in a combination of cottons, the Lovely Day Rep Weave Placemats Pattern is available as a print or download pattern so you can select your own colors. Or you can skip the planning and choose from one of our new kits here:
When you purchase a kit you’ll receive enough of all of these yarns (on convenient mini-cones) to weave eight finished placemats. Or, if you feel like experimenting, weave four or six mats and dedicate the additional warp length to a corresponding runner in a different block pattern!
The project is designed as a 2-block rep weave for 4 shafts. It requires a weaving width of at least 12 inches and a reed capable of 40 epi (we used a 10-dent). You’ll also need a threading hook and 12″ – 18″ stick or ski shuttle.
The Lovely Day Rep Weave project makes eight placemats approximately 12″ by 16″ finished. Since they’re cotton and very sturdy these placemats are machine washable!
Rep weave is a warp-faced technique, and we’ve chosen lustrous and easy to work with 5/2 Pearl Cotton Yarn for our warp. We’ve used a main color, plus four harmonious colors, to create the patterned blocks of color. Since you’re warping a lot of tightly sett warp threads we find it easier and faster to wind your warp from multiple mini cones at a time – there’s plenty of yardage included in the kits to try this method!
Rep weaves also use a heavier “filler” yarn that creates the wonderful textured ridges and is just barely visible – mostly just in the loops at the edges of your weaving. For this we’ve used Medium Cotton 16/8 Mop Yarn in a color that coordinates with the main color. To create the crisp, firm texture you’ll also use a finer weft between the “ridges” and for this we’ve used 10/2 Pearl Cotton Yarn, again in a coordinating color.
HELPFUL REP WEAVE TIPS:
The fabric gets pretty bulky and stiff so for the 1.5 inches at each end of your mats or runner we recommend using just the finer 10/2 Pearl Cotton as weft. Then when you fold over and hem the ends you’ll have a thinner fabric to work with and your finished mats will lay flat and look great!
With such a tightly sett warp you may find your shed is a little less open than you are used to. Advance your weaving often so you’re keeping as deep a shed as possible. As you change sheds you will want to beat more than once. Beat first with previous shed open and once more with the next shed open. This will help “lock” the heavier weft in place and keep your ridges nice and crisp, giving it the distinctive rep weave look!
Have a lovely weave with the new Lovely Day rep weave project – and as always, get in touch if we can help!
