Halcyon Yarn takes great pleasure in supporting our local, regional and coastal communities here in Maine. Not only do we source many products and supplies from these areas, we also feature (and share!) these special places and people in our Fall Yarn Catalogs.

For 2013 we’re excited to be partnering with one of our favorite organizations – The Friends of Seguin Island Light (FOSILS). “The Friends” was established to raise awareness and funds to support the Seguin Island Light Station, it’s extraordinary first order Fresnel lens, and the structures that house it. The light has served as a beacon to sailors at the mouth of the Kennebec River since 1857. The irreplaceable lens is the only one in Maine and its light can be seen over 20 nautical miles away. The lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in 1795,  sits atop Seguin Island, a treasure of solitude, beauty, maritime history and unusual flora and fauna.

Throughout the year we are featuring products and patterns inspired by Seguin and its environs. We have made a number of trips with friends, family, and staff to the island, and taken many of the photographs for our soon-to-be-mailed yarn catalog there. We have had a wonderful time visiting and working with the “The Friends”, including its visiting lighthouse keeper. We know that you would too! We hope you’ll make a point of visiting Halcyon Yarn during “the season” and then visiting Seguin via ferry. You can even reserve overnight accommodations for a truly special experience.

As this year of featuring Seguin moves forward we’ll be telling you more about the Island, the Light and its preservation. A portion of proceeds of our Seguin Light inspired products will be donated to FOSILS for its work.

We hope you enjoy these “tastes of Seguin” while you’re eagerly awaiting the new Yarn Catalog. We also hope you’ll have a chance to enjoy the Island as much as we have, be it through a visit, photographs, or working with fibers and patterns inspired by this wonderful treasure.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed seeing this article on Seguin Lighthouse. I grew up vacationing for two weeks every summer at Camp Seguin which was about a mile down the road from Reid State Park and on foggy days or at night we would watch the light from Seguin and listen to the fog horn. As an adult we started camping on Hermit Island when Camp Seguin closed, but I missed the Lighthouse! Thanks for the memories.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have what I hoped would be this sweater started, but I’m making it up as I go along. Needless to say, having the pattern will really help. Thank you!

    Hi Again!
Update: I hadn’t realized that we can print the children’s sweater pattern for you if your order includes Cascade. Add the pattern to your order here: http://halcyonyarn.com/products/Patterns/0680417P.html
    Thanks! Amos

Hi All… Here is a link to a previous post that we had about the children’s sweater: http://halcyonyarn.com/news/general-news/7836 It is a free pattern from Cascade, and we had fun coming up with some new yarn and color combinations. Thanks for the interest… Enjoy!

I’ve been looking for the pattern for the child’s sweater pictured in the lighthouse. If anyone knows where I can find it, please let me know. Great newsletter this month!
