spaceoddity1-copy

At the risk of repeating myself…  [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock]  is beautiful!!! I don’t care if I sound sales-pitchy. I want to shout it from the rooftops: I love this yarn!

For a little bit of back story, read my last post about this yarn here.

Now that I’ve actually knit with it, I really can’t praise it enough. Such squishy softness… it has me making incomplete sentences. But enough about the yarn. Let’s talk about this thing I just made with it: the Space Oddity Shawl Pattern.

I wanted to design something that would make a luxury wool like the Falkland Aran more accessible; something small that only uses a few skeins, is good for beginners, and is just in time for the gift making frenzy that is Christmas. Everyone here at the shop agreed, a garter stitch shawl would be just the thing.

I must sheepishly admit (pun absolutely intended) that I had never made a shawl before. Don’t get me wrong, I love them – it’s just that I’ve never been drawn to them for some reason. I would have been perfectly happy to let that lie, but I have a job to do and so I buckled down to do it. Wouldn’t you know, by the time I was binding off this sample I already had my own yarn sitting next to me so I could immediately start one for myself. No joke. This from a woman who can’t even bring herself to make a second sock. What could possibly be responsible for this sudden change of heart?

My theory is that it’s all about mindless knitting. This shawl is essentially a two row repeat: row one has you working yarn over increases, while row two is simply knit. You work until you run out of one color, then attach the next, and so on.  Great for hunkering down on the couch and watching entire seasons of TV shows at a time, not that I would ever do that (*ahem* Golden Girls).

This is a great project for playing with colors, but for those of you who would rather let us do the work, we’ve put kits together in four different color ways- [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] . Not to mention, you’ll actually save money if you buy the kit! And here’s another tip, from a verified yarn hoarder: this shawl makes a great stash buster. As long as the yarn is worsted weight or finer, you can get crazy with color (or make one in a solid color for a more classic, subdued piece). With all these options, why not give it a knit?
