Beautiful Wooden Buttons

alosada-wood-buttons-maine-made

Looking for the perfect finishing touch on your hand-knit cardigan? Alosada’s hand-carved wooden buttons are perfect on a simple cardigan or to fasten a shawl. Meticulously carved and finished, each button shows the unique grain of the wood and is a great compliment to your handmade items. Each round button measures approximately 1.5” and is lightweight and durable. A graceful swirl is carved into the face and they are polished smooth with a natural beeswax finish so they won’t snag even the lightest fibers. In Black WalnutBloodwood, or Sugar Maple, the colors are warm and natural.

The story behind Alosada buttons is as beautiful as the buttons themselves. In collaboration with master woodworker Tom Côte, our neighbors to the north in Aroostook County, Maine, have formed a woodworking group to keep traditional skills alive and bring income to rural Maine. Many of those involved are Native American and Alosada, and it’s parent company Aloka, borrow their names from the local Algonquin language. Aloka refers to a belief in the importance and pleasure of meaningful work and adding value through our actions. The company is based on a heritage of craftsmanship, reliance on natural resources, and a belief that for something to be beautiful it must also be well-made and functional. Alosada buttons are a simple reflection of these values. In the deeply forested north, trees are connected to many people’s livelihoods and with each button Alosada brings the beauty of the northern woods to you.

Inspired to make something that will show off these beautiful Maine-made buttons? Here are some great projects that will look even better with Alosada buttons!

The Big Easy Cowl in Bear Creek or Rasta

A super bulky, extra cozy, and quick to knit neck warmer. The Big Easy can be worn as a scarf or closed with buttons to make a snuggly cowl. Finished size is approximately 7″ x 53″ and the piece requires 130 yards of super bulky yarn, three buttons, and size 17 knitting needles.
