Free Spirit Shawls – Careful, it’s contagious!

Heath Shawl, knit by Gwynn, modeled by Susan, from Free Spirit Shawls:

When the book Free Spirit Shawls – 20 Eclectic Knits for Every Day arrived at the store I barely gave it a glance. Then a friend and longtime customer came into the shop to buy yarn for a shawl in the book. Now, Anne doesn’t spend her money lightly or buy books willy-nilly (like I do!) so I figured I should give the book a proper look-see. I promptly bought it and made a plan.

Having Noro Taiyo Sock Yarn laying around my knitting basket made the shawlette Heath an easy choice for my first project. I am thrilled to say that I have finished one and started a second. I owe Susan a big thank you for modeling as you see above. These shawlettes are turning out to be the perfect summer-time project. Not too big, unwieldy or hot in the lap, easy repeats to memorize without being mind-numbing and at the end, a perfect gift! Plus, who doesn’t have a skein or 2 of sock yarn just dying to be used?

Like I said, I have already started a second Heath with possible plans for a third. I was never fond of Kureyon Sock Yarn which makes Taiyo Sock an especially wonderful surprise. It is lightweight and extremely soft. Even before washing. Honestly, the fabric is divine. (It has me searching for the perfect cardi pattern to knit out of it. Keep you posted on that!)

Free Spirit Shawls is simply loaded with smart and sweet projects that take no time at all to make. Many are the perfect shoulder cover-up for a cool night; others are part shawl/part scarf that can be worn many ways into the fall and winter. I’ve chosen 5 or 6 that I especially want to make and chosen the perfect yarn. Heath (check!), Maedwe using our own locally made White Worsted Wool Warp(s) Yarn, Mineral using new Knitting Fever Painted Desert Yarn, Lindsay (cover shawl, see image below) using [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] and [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] together and for the fall Euclid using Swans Island Worsted Organic Merino Wool Yarn. And of curse, don’t forget to see all the wonderful colors of [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] .

Anne completed Bethe using Heritage Sock Yarn and it is unbelievably drapey and soft. She was kind enough to let us photograph her in it (right) and we were even able to keep our hands off of it long enough to take a photo (it’s that soft!). I’ll have more on Maedwe in the next post; of course I have already started it! 59110500-275

Now, if you already own [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , check out the book Sock - Yarn Shawls. These shawls are more elaborate with more lace in the patterns. They are beautiful and should definitely be included in your list of shawls to make with sock yarn.

    Your Heath Shawl looks great!

I also think this is going to be a popular summer project.
