Just in time for the holidays – Five Patterns For Holiday Weaving offers up timely projects for every taste and skill level!

Projects include a set of four Holiday Towels, embellished with a charming row of evergreen trees, beautiful Swedish Lace Towels, a versatile Four Patterns, Four Towels project using variations on huck and waffle weave, Elegant Placemats in huck, and a festive Diamonds in Winter runner.

The Teach It With Towels: Swedish Lace Towels, by Vicki Tardy, are especially tempting! They are a great “sampler” project designed to let you explore a number of variations in Swedish lace, which is a combination of Bronson and huck. The project is woven on a 4-shaft loom with at least a 20” weaving width, and an 8-dent reed.

Woven in Homestead 8/2 Cotton Yarn, you’ll need 2,610 yards for warp and 2,532 for weft. Our Homestead 8/2 cotton offers a great range of colors to choose from, or enjoy the simple elegance of crisp white. Plus you’ll need less than two pounds, so this is a very economical project using either pound cones or mini-cones. The directions are for a full baker’s dozen (13) towels so you’ve got a selection of beautiful handmade gifts at the ready!

If you’re looking to add a bit of shine to your holiday table the Diamonds in Winter Runner, by Susan Porter, is the perfect finishing touch. A beautiful 8-shaft twill, the runner uses 5/2 Pearl Cotton Yarn in garnet red (approx. 3,300 yards) plus just a few warp threads of metallic to give it a little sparkle. One mini-cone (200 yards) of Chainette Metallic Yarn is plenty, in a choice of twinkling colors!

Runners are a wonderful hostess gift, a great way to protect and liven up your own table, sideboard or dresser, or just a great inspiration to weave something beautiful and try something new! Table runners are one of the most commonly woven items since they usually require minimal finishing (they’re just a big rectangle) and there is so much room to experiment, from cheerful block weaves and basic colors to nuanced color studies and complex techniques. The Technicolor Table Runners collection features projects for a range of techniques on both four and eight shafts.

We’ve had supplemental warping on our minds lately, thanks to Deb Essen’s recently released book Easy Weaving with Supplemental Warp (see our review here), so we’re partial to Barbara Walker’s Log cabin with a Supplementary Warp. Woven entirely in user-friendly 10/2 Pearl Cotton Yarn, we love the combination of natural and deep red colors with a pop of turquoise. For the warp and weft you’ll need 455 yards of natural and 553 yards of dark red or purple, plus 60 yards of turquoise for the supplementary warp. Halcyon Yarn mini-cones of 10/2 Pearl Cotton are 600 yards each, so you’d only need one in each color for a beautiful project under $30!

For something truly technicolor, Sarah Saulson’s Shadow-Weave Gamp For A Runner is woven in unmercerized Homestead 8/2 Cotton Yarn. Saulson credits the bright geometric design inspiration to Ghanaian Kente cloth, and the opportunity to experiment with different patterns in each block will make every piece unique. Homestead cotton also comes in 600 yard mini-cones, so don’t let a mix and match of colors hold you back!

There’s something about linen’s classic crispness and bounce, along with the slightly rustic texture, that always catches my attention, and the Lines of Lace In A Linen Runner, by Suzi Liles really shows off the best qualities of linen. Using just three colors, based on a Swedish Lace draft from Marguerite Davison’s [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , this runner is one I could see making in a series of different color combinations. Our Newport 16/2 Linen Yarn, is 100% Hungarian dry-spun linen, perfect for this project, and again, available in mini-cones so it’s very affordable to try a range of colors!
