Knitting hombres! Fiber arts news

Knitting without prejudice

It seems like there are more guys knitting these days, even if the increase we see in the store is only incremental. Still, we don’t really find men who knit in Maine to be all that unusual, and it’s easy to forget that in some places, there could be a strong stigma attached to men knitting. Well, this awesome and inspirational group of Chilean men are making viral headway and making knitting welcoming to all. Through regular classes, knitting in public sessions, and social media, they’re inspiring men to take up needles all over the world! And, er, looms, which we really like too :-)

One man knitting: Sams sweaters!

A wonderful interview on NPR with Sam Barsky – who is becoming a viral sensation and knitting his way into hearts around the world. His passion? Knitting sweaters of places and things that interest him… and then visiting those places and things… and photographing himself with both his sweater and the inspiration. Some more photos here and on his facebook page! His viral fandom is no surprise to us – so refreshing to see someone who has a passion and embraces it!

Knitting for strength and contentment

Bob Rutherford has a cool, if unusual, take on knitting. It’s given him a purpose in retirement – having knit and donated 10,000 socks! Now granted, he did use sock knitting machine, but it’s also a machine that he designed and made. There is a cool short video up on the CBC and some inspirational reflections from Bob on how getting help making the machines, supplying the yarns, and donating the wares, has pretty much kept him happy and centered.
