New crochet pattern! Broomstick lace top

The simple construction of the easy-to-crochet top makes the Ultra Twist Broomstick Lace Top - Crochet Pattern a great project for adventurous beginners and beyond. This flattering, versatile layering piece features a gracefully draped front worked in a Broomstick Lace variation. I crocheted it out of 3/2 Pearl Cotton Yarn, an affordable 100% mercerized cotton that comes in a TON of different colors. Not only is this top lovely and comfortable to wear – it’s fun to make, too!

Broomstick lace is a beautiful crochet technique that might seem a little intimidating at first. Don’t be afraid, though! It’s much easier than you think. The variation I used for this project is just a two-row repeat, and each row is worked with the right side facing you. For regular right-handed crocheters, this means Row 1 is worked from left to right (right to left for us southpaws). Row 1 consists of pulling up a loop through each stitch, and placing these loops, one after another, on a holder of some sort. Traditionally, this holder was a broomstick. I used a big ol’ size US 19 knitting needle. Here’s what it looks like after pulling up some loops:

Row 2 is worked in the direction you normally crochet in, again still with the right side facing you. In Row 2, you single crochet into groups of loops, working one sc stitch for each loop in the group. For example, in the Ultra Twist variation I did “loop groups” of 5, so each group got 5 sc worked into it. Once you reach the end of the row, all stitches accounted for, you’re ready to repeat the process.

Gauge is of course important, and should be checked – however, if you don’t have a giant knitting needle on hand you can always get creative. You just need something big enough around to make the right size loops, and it needs to be able to hold those loops while you’re pulling them all up. A size P/Q crochet hook is of a similar thickness, or you can be really resourceful and try out another object you have on hand. I’ve used a drum stick, stick shuttle, and the handle of a meat tenderizer before…

Once you’ve made the pieces, the Ultra Twist top is easy to assemble. The pattern includes illustrations to help you with this part of the process. After sewing mine together, I hand washed and gently laid it flat to dry. Dark colors of 3/2 Pearl Cotton Yarn will run a little in a warm bath, so I recommend washing this piece by itself. That said, I couldn’t be happier with the drape of the front as well as the clever way in which the shoulder seams help to shape the bottom perimeter of the top and keep it in place on the body.

With a fit almost like a hug, I think this vest looks good with any outfit. Pull it over a camisole with jeans, or layer it over your favorite summer dress. For the best fit, I recommend making the size that closest matches your bust measurement. If you fall perfectly between two sizes (like lots of us do!), I suggest going with the smaller choice.

Happy crocheting – I hope you love your finished project as much as I do!
