New Yarns
Spring has come! Along with the long anticipated arrival of warm weather and flowers, here at Halcyon Yarn we’re welcoming the arrival of new yarns. Let us introduce them to you.
[Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] is a new yarn from Noro. Anyone remember Blossom from Noro? We can’t get it anymore in the U.S. but you don’t have to be sad about it anymore because Tanabata is here! Wow – we love the texture and color blends. It is deliciously lumpy and bumpy with alot more squiggly than Blossom. It has everything but the kitchen sink in it: cotton, nylon, rayon, wool and silk. It is soft with wonderful drape and is LOADED with texture. Plus, it’s a fairly fast knit on a size 10 to 10.5 needle. And knitting with those lumps and bumps? Don’t worry. Unlike most boucles, they’re not a problem.
When Tanabata is knit in stockinette stitch, most of the squiggles and bumps end up on the wrong or purl side. This is because the purl stitch on the back side is longer and the yarn has more room to open up. If you wind your ends in carefully you can have a completely reversible sweater. Gwynn knit a top-down Knitting Pure and Simple pattern [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] which has no seams and it is super reversible. To make it more appropriate for warm weather she shortened the length and made 3/4 length sleeves. Take a look.
With 2 thumbs up from Gwynn, Tanabata is sure to be a winning addition to the yarns here at Halcyon. Gwynn has inspired many of us here at Halcyon Yarn to plan a project of our own. Although beautiful when knit, I’m thinking of using Tanabata in the weft of a woven summer scarf. How about you?
Jöklalopi (Bulky lopi) Yarn is another Noro yarn. Although it’s been around, it’s new to us. The same great yarn as Noro Silk Garden Yarn, just in a dk weight. I’m eyeing a Knitting Pure & Simple pattern for this, Top Down Shawl Collar Cardigan by Knitting Pure and Simple. I think I’ll omit the buttons and have it be an open cardigan that just drapes.

[Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] is just in time for warm weather socks. This self patterning yarn is a great blend of superwash wool, cotton, nylon and polyester. You will love the little bit of stretch in this yarn – it keeps the cotton from being too stiff.
[Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] has been brought on board to replace [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] . It’s unique construction of a nylon core wrapped in merino wool creates an extremely light weight and soft super bulky yarn. We’re having fun looking at the colors and planning more of our favorite super bulky patterns, The Cuddler, The Family Favorite Hat and Alpine Topper hat pattern. Since it’s so light weight, it’s great for quick knit garments too. Pick up a copy of one of the Debbie Bliss Como books before they’re out of print, [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] and [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] . Cortina works beautifully in these patterns.

Plus, we have new colors in [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] . Taiyo has become a favorite yarn here at Halcyon Yarn among the staff and with our customers. I picked up a new color to knit Basic Garter Stitch Kimono. I’m nearly done with the back and love the way the colors are working up. Gwynn combined Taiyo color #023 and Tanabata color #001 for a stunning summer-weight scarf. Beth was gracious enough to be a model.
Are you tempted to knit a scarf of your own? With size 10 needles and Taiyo cast-on 250 stitches. Knit for 3″. Switch to size 10 1/2 needles and Tanabata and knit until Tanabata runs out. Bind-off with Taiyo. It’s that easy!
New colors have also been added to Peace Fleece Yarn. If you’re not familiar with Peace Fleece I really recommend you take a look. It’s a classic worsted weight yarn with unique solids, heathers and tweeds. The story behind the yarn is even more interesting. It’s my yarn of choice for the classic [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] .
