Sunshine Report!

At Halcyon Yarn we strive to be environmentally responsible – one big way we do that is the solar array on our roof! Yesterday marked the Summer Solstice so we’re celebrating the sun and sharing our annual Sunshine Report…

If you’ve driven by our store on Coastal Route One in Maine have you looked at the roof? Atop our 110 year old building is a grid-tied photovoltaic array, installed by ReVision Energy, an employee-owned solar company in Portland, Maine.

This week has been extra sunny so there’s plenty of juice – below is a snapshot of  today’s solar power generated. Despite a very overcast winter and spring here at latitude 43.9106° N we’ve generated over twenty-two thousand kWh of clean energy since last solstice – that’s a lot of CO2 avoided this year. It’s a small step, but every bit helps! We run much of the heating and cooling in our building off of six large heat pumps, powered by these solar panels. We power most of the offices and common area electricity from the solar array as well. There’s always more to do and we’ll keep working to improve our energy footprint.

We want to take a minute to thank the sunshine for helping us in our mission to improve our environmental impact!

We especially want to thank YOU, our customers, for choosing to shop with an independent business that is committed to investing in more than just the bottom line. We’re committed to a brighter, more sustainable future and we couldn’t do it without your business – thank you, and happy summer!!

Thanks for including this article in your newsletter. We also have a solar array installed by ReVision and love seeing the bar graph of “generated” vs.usage on our CMP bill. Keep up the good work toward sustainability AND a profitable, lovely fiber and yarn store!

Thanks, Kris! Isn’t it nice to see that little graph chugging along with the sunshine… Glad you’re a part of this good work too. Thanks for the compliments!

  3. Mary Alice says:

I love that you are a LYS with green energy even though I shop through your online shop due to the distance from my home in PA to you. I wish you much success in your continued solar, and other “green” endeavors

    1. Gretchen says:

Thank you, Mary Alice! It’s customers like you who make it possible.
