The Zealana Rimu hails from New Zealand where it’s production supports conservation efforts. The unique brushtail possum component provides more than just a cool anecdote. It’ll also keep you nice and warm… in fact it’s 35% warmer than cashmere and 55% warmer than merino wool. Just three balls will make a big comfy ribbed scarf that you can knit super easily on a size 6 or 7 needle. We’ve had the Zealana Rimu Trunk Show in the shop for about two weeks now and if the story doesn’t hook you, then the patterns and samples certainly will! (A sneak peak of the trunk show items including some of the patterns found exclusively in Zealana Passport…but more on that later!)

The pattern book, [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] boasts that it’s “New Zealand MADE to amaze” and they aren’t wrong. The Mesh Shawlette made the cover page for good reason. Knit with 4 skeins of Green Taru this shawl does a wonderful job of showing off that fabulous shadowy halo that I mentioned before. Or perhaps you’re in the market for a go-to winter hat? Found it! The Fisherman’s Rib Slouchy Hat is knit up using 1 skein of Shadow and 2 of Rata Red. Who doesn’t love a little pop of color in the winter?

Can you suggest a scarf pattern using Rimu by Zealana Yarn? I thought it would make a terrific
    and interesting Christmas gift(s).

Hi Sylvie, A scarf in Rimu will absolutely make a very warm and soft Christmas gift – with an interesting story! The simple ribbed gold/green scarf shown in the video is knit from four balls, and doesn’t even need a pattern. Simply cast on 57 stitches using a (US) size 6 or 7 needle, then create the ribbing by alternating three knit stitches and three purl stitches. This will give you nineteen “ribs” for a very easy scarf that shows of the yarn’s “halo” and warmth. If you are in the mood for something a little fancier, the Rimu book featured in the post has some great accessories, including the blue/green shawl shown on the cover. A couple of other patterns you might try are the Shell Lace Scarf, or the Full Harvest Scarf, both of which are available in print or as a download. These both call for a slightly heavier yarn, but would work nicely knit at a slightly smaller gauge and would really show off the lovely texture and halo of the Rimu. I hope this helps and that you enjoy knitting the Rimu!
