Wonderfully squishy, Ushya Yarn by Mirasol is the new bulky on our block. Ushya is 98% Wool, 2% Polyamide (fancy nylon), and totally wearable. This week only, through Monday November 21st, Ushya is 10% off!

In a palette of lovely heathers ranging from neutrals to wearable brights, this would be a useful, versatile addition to anyone’s stash. It’s also chainette, and for those of you unfamiliar with this, let me tell you a little bit about it (you can even see my video):

Unlike a lot of bulky wools, Ushya is super light and squishy – no heavy, droopy sweaters here! This is partially due to the quality of the wool, but it’s enhanced by the chainette construction. What that means is, instead of being spun into a single or plied yarn, this is essentially a knitted tube of fluffy, unspun fibers. There aren’t any lumps and bumps on the outside, and it’s hollow and open on the inside. This means the yarn is just about the loftiest it could possibly be, not to mention that hollow space traps your body heat so whatever you make out of this yarn is going to be super warm.

I love knitting with bulky weight yarn. I tend to knit obsessively until I finish a project, so it’s great when that happens, well… quickly. There was a time in my life (not that long ago) when I was knitting exclusively with bulky yarns. Grab some US 15 needles, cast on 10 or so stitches, and you’ve got a scarf within a few hours. There are so many great quick knit projects that this yarn would be awesome for, but it also makes a great “roving” style wool for thrummed knitting. Speaking of thrummed knitting, Ushya is the perfect replacement for the Plymouth De Aire that was originally used in our Alpine Topper hat pattern.

For those of you interested in making the super popular Azel Pullover from The Velvet Acorn Designs on Ravelry, this is a terrific yarn! The pullover pattern is written for kids (size 2) through an adult XL and you can buy it directly on Ravelry or from us via our Ravelry Pro account.

As cool as all that is, I think Mirasol’s story is even cooler. A percentage of the sales of this yarn goes to a non-profit called the Mirasol Project, whose goal it is to help provide children in the Peruvian highlands with better access to education. It’s a beautiful story, and I recommend you check it out here!
