The Hottest New Project at Halcyon Yarn

Well, I think in my last post I said that everything is coming up Plymouth. Plymouth Yarn that is. And it bears repeating. It has been a veritable Plymouth frenzy here at Halcyon Yarn. First with the Ojo de Dios Shawl from the Interweave Knits Winter 2014 issue (sadly, the paper version is now out of print but you can still purchase a digital version from Interweave) paired with the lovely Plymouth Gina.  (How are all of you coming with that shawl? We sent out tons of yarn!) Now, we’re cheering about the Plymouth Baby Alpaca Brush Yarn.

In the latest issue of Vogue Knitting (the Vogue Knitting Winter 2013/14 issue) – I know, it’s Vogue. But stay with me. I always buy Vogue Knitting as soon as I see it because I love poring over it. Swanky projects, new products, terrific advertisements.  Admittedly, I very rarely knit out of the mag but to me that makes this project even more special. I had been looking for a pattern to knit with the Baby Alpaca Brush and boy, oh boy Vogue served one up!

The Deep V Hoodie designed with Baby Alpaca Brush was the perfect project for me to get my hands up close and personal with this yarn. For a while the shop had a Cabled Afghan sample made with cream colored Baby Alpaca Brush. After feeling that fabric I knew I wanted to wrap up in this yarn. What better than a pullover hoodie, especially this winter!

So I chose 3 colors, Plymouth Baby Alpaca Brush color 0170 (1620), [Sorry, item discontinued or temporarily out of stock] , Plymouth Baby Alpaca Brush color 0110 (6307) and dove right in. And I loved working with the yarn immediately. The gauge is interesting; slightly bulky gauge (3.75 st.) on a middle worsted needle (8). The fabric was so thick and lush I felt as though I was working with a much larger needle. The fabric certainly knit up quickly. A baby alpaca and acrylic blend, this yarn is light and soft. Really light and soft. Fluffy cotton ball light and baby alpaca soft. It is perfect next to the skin and its brushed texture will have you wanting more. It’s perfect for a garment given its warmth while weighing next to nothing.

If you are ready to give it a go but not on the garment level, think cowl or small lap throw to cozy up the couch. I can’t think of any yarn I’d rather have around my neck in the freezing temps this winter has served up. The Rippling Ringlet Infinity Cowl is going to be my next project for the Baby Alpaca Brush. Want to join me? Added bonus this pattern is free with the purchase of yarn.

Plymouth also has a great selection of patterns they’ve designed especially for the Baby Alpaca Brush.
